As we are preparing to close this year, I thought it wise to take a look at some of my experiences, accomplishments, discoveries etc of 2006.
2006 was really a great year for me as it is when I finished my university education and its when I officially joined the country’s workforce. Before I go on, I would like to give great thanks to God, my parents (Mr. and Mrs. Kakinda Daniel), my brothers and sister, my friend George Appiah and all my friends who have enabled me to get this far.
At the beginning of the year, I was blessed to be part of the very few in the world to be invited for the Africa Source II - Free and Open Source Software for Local Communities Workshop which took place in Kalangala, Uganda from 8th to 15th Jan, 2006. The workshop attached participants with a range of experience who were sharing with one another about how technology can help make their NGOs. All participants had had a history of work with service and advocacy NGOs, educational organisations, NGO resource centres, community centres and health information organisations.
During the workshop, I also had to work on my dissertation “AN EGG PRODUCTION, SALES AND PROFITS FORECASTING SYSTEM FOR A POULTRY FARM” which I handed in to my Institute. I managed to write an application in Visual Basic 6 with Ms Access as the backend. The application wasn’t only about making record-keeping easier for poultry farmers BUT I used my Statistics knowledge to compute for trends in egg production, sales and profits and then used those trends to forecast assuming that the conditions would remain constant. The application was also to help farmers avail different reports accordingly. It was really successfully and I earned myself a distinction ‘A’ in the dissertation. I am really thankful to my supervisor, Mr. Ambrose Serunjogi who guided me during the research and compilation of this dissertation.
After my final year at campus i.e. Makerere University, I returned to SchoolNet Uganda where I continued to do my internship. During this time, I worked with another intern from Ghana George Appiah, SchoolNet Uganda Executive Director and Technical Director and other interns with helping schools. We had several training and sensitization workshops. We also set up a number of School Based Tele centers across the country with Nalinya Lwantale Primary School being our main focus. The primary school received 50 laptops and we set up its LAN, trained all the teachers and they are now integrating IT in the local curiculum and using it to teach their pupils. Before long, George had to leave the country as his internship period was done with WEC.
