Bicycles in The NetherlandsYou might be wondering It is incredible to believe that almost everyone in Netherlands uses a bicycle in one way or the another. Back to my country, it is quite rare to find riding bicycles as a means of transport or something like that. While it is kinda prestigious for someone to own an expensive car, right here it isn’t much. Almost everyone uses a bicycle as a means of transport unless it is a far distance. I was actually astonished when I saw that bicycle lanes as part of the roads and also sometimes controlled by traffic lights. I guess one of the reasons for this is that most of their country is flat, people love sports and it is passed from one generation to another.

So what do you think about this? I know to most Ugandans, this should be something strange to hear.

  • Matrich, considering the terrible traffic congestion in Kampala, I think you should invite our Mayor to visit your website and get a tip or two on alternative means of travel in our beautiful city.

  • Hi John,
Nice seeing you over here. To me, it was incredible to find out that even CEOs, Mayors etc. use bikes as a means of transport if where they are going isn’t too far. bicycles also have lanes and traffic lights. It was really interesting to me.

Yeah!! sometimes, I really wonder what our leaders borrow from these countries when they travel.

There are some many interesting things which we could borrow but anywayz, I think you guys are the leaders of tomorrow so we can have hope for the future.

  • For Ugandans to start using bicycles, accidents will increase. Just like Bodabodas. How I wish we can develop our infrastructure.

    • Inspector, Don’t forget that we’ve got some towns with bicycles like Jinja but of course, if our infrastructure was styled up, then things would be much better and there was rule of law because that is one another thing I don’t like about bicycles, you might be knocked down

  • I can imagine how much kgs of dust I can get riding from Busega through Natete-Nalukolongo to Kibuye putting on a white shirt. We would do that but the poor roads with dust and the road user indiscipline who can not respect those with small means of transport. It is wise idea to protect our environment emisions but it is still far. If the fuel prices can go up and the vehicle owners cant forego vehicles, then what do you think can force them to.

    • @Ssempa, I totally agree with you though I think we should probably try the discipline especially for shorter distances and for people who have been blessed with great roads. Can you imagine that someone can decide to take a vehicle to go a short distance of 400 meters or less while walking would be the best. It is incredible that our so called rich guys suffer from funny stuff because of lack of exercises , all they do is drive from the garage of their houses to office and sit the whole day, mbu, it’s how rich guys do their thing but that brings to them loads of issues

Well, also, the people in authority certainly have to take their responsibility as they are just stewards of the property and the things of our country answerable to God, Almighty.
